Just a few days ago, the state legislature passed sweeping renewable energy legislation. Democratic Senator Joe Simitian’s SB 14 and Democratic Assemblyman Paul Krekorian’s AB 64 would require that California utilities produce 33 percent renewable energy by 2020, the highest standard in the nation.
This mandate would create thousands of high-paying green jobs, slash our carbon footprint, and protect us from being held hostage to fossil fuel prices. And it has incredibly diverse support‚ from labor to green industry to three of the largest utilities in the state.
Unfortunately, Governor Schwarzenegger says he has decided to veto this year’s most significant environmental legislation and pursue a renewable energy requirement via executive order instead.
Use our easy online tool to contact the governor now and ask him to sign this landmark bill.
An executive order may sound alright, but it’s no substitute for legislation.
Executive orders lack the force of law, and they can be reversed at any time without a vote.
That’s why the San Francisco Chronicle opined this week that he “should get on board instead of threatening a veto.”
Please customize a message to Governor Schwarzenegger using our easy online tool and ask him to sign California’s renewable energy standard into law now.
Peace and friendship,
-John Burton
P.S. We need real leadership from the governor on renewable energy. Please join me in asking him to sign SB 14 (Simitian) and AB 64 (Krekorian).
